We tighten the spark map, optimize fuel trims, and unlock the safe timing GM left behind. The LT1 is a sweet platform — fueling is conservative from the factory, so there's real headroom on 93 octane. Stage 2 with headers + cam is where 550+ wheel hp on pump gas becomes the norm.

Yes for Stage 1 and Stage 2 maps. The LT1 pulls timing aggressively on low octane and you'll lose the power you paid for.
